Most rural counties in every state

  • Most rural counties in every state

Rural counties have been in the news lately, as elections can be swayed by rural voters turning out in large numbers. Often, this sizable voting bloc counters the larger populations in state's city centers. That's why it's helpful to know where the most rural areas are, whether that information is used for campaigning at local events, or knocking on doors to canvass potential voters.

Stacker pulled data from the 2010 Census Urban and Rural Classification to compile a list of the most rural county in each state. This information—the most recent available, as the census only conducts this study every ten years—includes the total square mileage of each county's rural and urban space, the rural population, the overall county population, and population density in rural areas. Read on to discover your state's most rural locale.
