If you're a fan of biographical fiction or nonfiction, April opened up a treasure trove of new series on streaming services to fall in love with, including a new season of what critics have called a "true-crime unicorn."
More than nine years after the jaw-dropping first season finale, Max's "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst" released a long-awaited second season on April 21. The true-crime docuseries has been championed for being one of the few that led to an arrest on a cold case, and the second season shows the aftermath of that investigation.
But "The Jinx" is just one true-crime series among the 20 most popular shows to stream right now, a ranking Stacker compiled using data from Reelgood as of April 22. (IMDb ratings and other data points were added for supplementary insights.) Three more of the top 20 are new series based on true stories. Hulu's "Under the Bridge" tells the tragic story of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl who was brutally murdered by her peers in 1997, and the resulting investigation; "Franklin" is an Apple TV+ miniseries about the secret mission that Benjamin Franklin (played by Michael Douglas) went on in 1776 in an attempt to convince France to side with America in the Revolutionary War; and the Netflix miniseries "Baby Reindeer" follows Scottish comedian Richard Gadd's twisted experience with a stalker.
If you're looking for something a little more lighthearted, a quarter of the shows in the top 20 are categorized as comedies. If you like more fast-paced series, another 25% are action and adventure.
