Essential COVID-19 stats: Where testing, case counts, and outbreaks stand in your state

  • Essential COVID-19 stats: Where testing, case counts, and outbreaks stand in your state

18 states had 100 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents in the last week, putting them in the "red zone" according to a July 14 document prepared for the White House Coronavirus Task Force. The Center for Public Integrity, which released this document, reported that states in this "red zone" should consider limiting public gatherings and mandating masks.

Yet local leaders are responding differently: Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on July 16 announced the state's city and county leaders could not order mask-wearing in public places, voiding at least 15 existing local orders. Georgia is one of the 18 "red zone" states for new cases listed by the White House research document, as well as one of 11 "red zone" states for test positivity, meaning that over 10% of the states' diagnostic test results are coming back positive.

Other states in the "red zone" for both thresholds include Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Texas. Outbreaks in these states and others contributed to a record day on July 16: all 50 states and six territories combined reported more than 71,000 new cases, more than any singular date so far. The COVID Tracking Project's daily update notes that the surge in cases is broadening; nine states on July 16 reported more than 2,000 new cases.

With news coming so quickly amid reopenings, reclosings, overcrowded hospitals, and new insights into how COVID-19 spreads, Stacker compiled essential COVID-19 statistics from several different sources to paint a clearer picture of how the pandemic is progressing in each state. Case counts, fatality counts, and testing counts are up to date as of July 16 and sourced from the COVID-19 Tracking Project at The Atlantic, a volunteer effort that compiles and standardizes COVID-19 data from state public health departments. Hospital capacity data are sourced from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network and are up to date as of July 8. Nursing home outbreak data are sourced from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Nursing Home COVID-19 Public File and are up to date as of June 28. Prison and jail outbreak data are sourced from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) COVID-19 Behind Bars Data Project, spearheaded by Professor Sharon Dolovich, and are up to date as of July 14.

Keep reading to see how case counts have fluctuated in your state, where states stand on flattening the curve, and where the biggest outbreaks so far have taken place.
