Most anticipated movies coming out in 2020

Hollywood is entering a new decade, following a period that brought mega-franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the return of box office behemoths like "Star Wars." The foundation of the American film industry has changed, and moviegoers are already eager for the biggest studio blockbusters of 2020.

These don't necessarily have to be big-budgeted films, with anticipated films including smaller Christian films and character-based films that have garnered excitement due to the stars or director attached to the project. Nevertheless, big studios like Disney, Warner Bros., and Universal have already begun to promote their big tentpoles for the year.

Some of them are continuations of franchises from the previous decade, like "Black Widow" and "The Eternals" as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Others are long-awaited sequels to films going as far back as the 1990s and even the 1980s. There are reboots and reimaginings to older properties and the occasional original film, which, of course, still carries a high concept premise and some star power to boot.

When it comes to the most hyped films of the year, many of them will skew to the summer season and during the holidays, when audiences are available and are most keen for some escapism in the movie theater. These films don't particularly represent what will probably be the big award winners in the next Oscar season, but they will most likely haul plenty of cash in the box office due to several factors.

To come up with this list and to measure anticipation, Stacker created a blended anticipation index of trailer views on YouTube and Wiki pageviews over the past three months (Sept. 30, 2019, to Dec. 30, 2019) for all American movies coming out in 2020. Movies with projected 2020 release dates that have yet to be announced were included.

Click through to see which movies audiences are the most excited for, and decide for yourself which ones will get you to the cineplex on opening weekend.

The ever-popular Sonic, the Hedgehog video game character, will finally receive a live-action film adaptation, with Ben Schwartz providing the voice of the speedy CG character and Jim Carrey playing his rival Dr. Robotnik. Sonic hails from another world and must team up with a local cop played by James Marsden to escape the clutches of both the government and Robotnik. In an unprecedented move, the film was pushed back several months to give Sonic a redesign after the initial trailer for the film was poorly received.

Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn from "Suicide Squad" in a new female-led film that has little to nothing to do with "Suicide Squad." The film features Harley Quinn after a breakup with the Joker, and the Cathy Yan-directed "Birds of Prey" has Quinn gathering a group, including Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to protect young girl Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). The film sports a colorful and devil-may-care attitude and aesthetic, with Robbie front and center.

A number of production hitches, including a change of directors from Danny Boyle to Cary Joji Fukunaga, were responsible for the delay of the upcoming James Bond motion picture, but "No Time to Die" starring Daniel Craig will finally have its release in 2020. This follow-up to "Spectre" centers on a James Bond coming out of retirement and will reportedly be Craig's final outing as the British spy. The film will have Bond face off against a villain played by Oscar winner Rami Malek ("Bohemian Rhapsody"). Other than Craig, returning cast members for this Bond film include Lea Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes, and Rory Kinnear, with new cast members including Ana de Armas and Lashana Lynch, the latter playing a new 00 agent.

In classic Christopher Nolan fashion, the plot and premise of his next thriller are shrouded in mystery. Starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki, amongst many other Nolan regulars, the movie is an espionage thriller that appears to involve some form of time travel or time manipulation. Even with a trailer viewable to the public, audiences are still confused but intrigued by the mind who crafted "Inception," "Memento," "The Prestige," and "Interstellar."

Even though Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), aka superspy Black Widow, met her demise in "Avengers: Endgame," her story has yet to end. Her self-titled film takes viewers to her time in-between the films "Captain America: Civil War" and "Avengers: Infinity War." While on the run, Natasha revisits her past, which includes her spy "family" of "sisters" (played by Florence Pugh from "Midsommar" and Rachel Weisz) and the "Red Guardian," the Russian counterpart to Captain America (David Harbour from "Stranger Things"). With their help, Natasha will square off against the Taskmaster and fight her way back to the place of her origin.
