Costliest hurricanes of all time

A single hurricane can cause billions of dollars in damage, not to mention the physical and emotional tool it takes on those in its path. In this past year, The United States has seen some pretty catastrophic natural disasters ranging from wildfires to hurricanes. Just recently, the Puerto Rican government officially announced the Hurricane Maria’s death toll to be upwards of 1,400 people— a number previously reported to be 64. Regardless of the fact that Puerto Rico is still recovering from the disaster, the third-costliest hurricane on record, a new hurricane season approaches, leaving the territory more vulnerable than ever.

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season spans form June 1st to November 30th. Hurricane recovery plans include everything from the basic distribution of food and water supplies to rebuilding highways, energy grid improvements and far-reaching infrastructure upgrades.

Using data from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Stacker ranked the costliest hurricanes of all time. On each slide you’ll find the category of the storm, the year it occurred and the region it impacted. The data includes hurricanes which impact Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the cost listed is in current U.S. dollars which have been adjusted for inflation. This data also addresses the cost of these hurricanes to the U.S. (and its territories), not to other countries or regions. More information on methodology can be found at the NHC
