The Highest Grossing Movies of 2018 (so far)

The 2018 movie season may still be underway, but it's already showing a marked improvement compared to last year—at least in terms of box office numbers. Powered by franchises, sequels, animated features and adaptations, Hollywood is simply raking in cash, and earning 8% more than it did in 2017. For those with blockbuster fatigue, all this might come as bad news, since it's films like "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Deadpool 2" that continue to dominate at the box office. For the Comic-Con crowd, however, there's never been a better time to go to the theaters. Plus, who's going to argue with the wild success of something like "The Incredibles 2" or "Black Panther"?

With the spirit of competition in the air, one may wonder what this year's highest grossing movies are so far. Stacker is here with the answer. Using data from The Numbers and Box Office Mojo, Stacker compiled a list of the highest grossing movies of 2018. It should be noted that these figures pertain to domestic box office numbers only, meaning worldwide ticket sales weren't taken into account. All movies released this year were considered and ranked according to box office performance. Counting down from #50, here are 2018's top grossing films (so far).

Opened: June 1, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $31,415,713

Total theater count: 3,015

Opening weekend box office earnings: $11,603,039

Based on a true story of survival, this harrowing film stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as a young couple who decides to sail across the ocean. However, what starts as a thrilling adventure turns into something far more disastrous when they find themselves in the midst of a powerful hurricane. As it turns out, their struggle has only begun.

Opened: March 23, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $31,970,030

Total theater count: 1,947

Opening weekend box office earnings: $1,620,294

Idiosyncratic auteur Wes Anderson once again utilizes stop-motion animation to superb effect in “Isle of Dogs.” In the film, a deadly dog pandemic has broken out in Japan, prompting authorities to send all canines to Trash Island. Unwilling to live without his beloved pet, a young boy travels to the island and encounters all sorts of obstacles along the way. Like all Anderson films, this one utilizes a range of top acting talents (many of whom have previously worked with the director), including Bill Murray, Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Greta Gerwig and Edward Norton, among others.

#48. Annihilation

Opened: February 23, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $32,732,301

Total theater count: 2,112

Opening weekend box office earnings: $11,071,584

On the heels of Alex Garland’s surprise 2014 hit, “Ex Machina,” comes this similarly heady sci-fi flick, which stars Natalie Portman as a biologist named Lena. Hoping to reunite with her missing husband, Lena enters a mysterious realm known as "The Zone," where the traditional laws of reality don’t apply. True to its mind-bending premise, the film includes an ending that might require some follow-up research to decipher.

#47. Death Wish

Opened: March 2, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $34,017,028

Total theater count: 2,882

Opening weekend box office earnings: $13,010,267

An old vigilante classic gets a modern upgrade with this 2018 remake from director Eli Roth. In the film, a surgeon (Bruce Willis) embarks on a violent quest for revenge after his family is attacked during a home invasion. Unlike the 1974 original, which earned a loyal following, made Charles Bronson a household name and spawned numerous sequels, the remake opened to little fanfare. In other words, don’t expect a franchise to follow.

#46. The 15:17 to Paris

Opened: February 9, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $36,250,957

Total theater count: 3,042

Opening weekend box office earnings: $12,554,286

Actor and director Clint Eastwood may be 88 years old, but he’s shown no signs of slowing down. His most recent effort to hit the big screen was “The 15:17 to Paris,” which follows a group of American men as they stave off a terrorist attack aboard a Paris-bound train. The film is based on a true story, and features the actual men who participated in the event playing themselves on-screen.

#45. The Commuter

Opened: January 12, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $36,343,858

Total theater count: 2,892

Opening weekend box office earnings: $13,701,452

Liam Neeson might have reinvented himself as a veritable action star over the last decade, but that doesn’t always equate to big box office dollars. For proof, look no further than “The Commuter,” in which Neeson’s character must locate a single passenger aboard a train, lest he and numerous others suffer fatal consequences. Does the premise sound eerily similar to “Non-Stop,” the 2014 plane-based action film also starring Neeson? Indeed it does, which might partially explain why many audiences decided to skip this ride.

#44. Paddington 2

Opened: January 12, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $40,442,052

Total theater count: 3,702

Opening weekend box office earnings: $11,001,961

Despite a whopping 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, this kid-friendly film didn’t fare too well at the domestic box office. Picking up where the first one left off, the film finds its titular character—a lovable bear named Paddington—settling in with the Brown family. In order to buy Aunt Lucy a special book for her 100th birthday, Paddington takes on a series of odd jobs. At long last, he’s able to purchase the book, only to have it stolen by a thief.

#43. Truth or Dare

Opened: April 13, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $40,717,020

Total theater count: 3,068

Opening weekend box office earnings: $18,667,855

In this 2018 thriller, a seemingly harmless game of “Truth or Dare” turns downright deadly after a supernatural force decides to get in on the action. Each player soon discovers that if he or she fails to tell the truth or complete the dare, there will be grave consequences. Like most films from Blumhouse Entertainment, this one squeezed a healthy profit out of its low budget, despite lackluster reception from critics and audiences alike.

#42. Love, Simon

Opened: March 16, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $40,826,341

Total theater count: 2,434

Opening weekend box office earnings: $11,756,244

In the first studio teen film to center on a gay protagonist, teenage boy Simon (Nick Robinson) comes out of the closet to his family and friends while confronting his own sexuality. He also searches for the identity of a mysterious boy named Blue, with whom he’s been romantically corresponding to via email. It might sound like melodramatic fare, but the movie stays light and comedic on its feet.

Total theater count: 2,742

Tyler Perry wrote and directed this 2018 thriller, which stars Taraji P. Henson as Melinda. After discovering that her husband has failed to uphold his marital vows, Melinda lets her rage get the best of her and goes to violent extremes. To make good on its themes of psychological distress, the film is broken down into five parts, with each part represented by an emotional state.

#38. Hereditary

In the wake of 9/11, the U.S. military sent 12 Green Berets into the remote mountains of Afghanistan, where they persuaded local warlords to help them take out thousands of Taliban fighters. Their story was first explored in the book “Horse Soldiers” by Doug Stanton, and again in this 2018 film. Leading the team into battle is Captain Mitch Nelson, played by actor Chris Hemsworth.

Opened: May 11, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $46,383,120

Total theater count: 2,537

Opening weekend box office earnings: $17,630,285

“Payback is a Mother.” So goes the tagline for “Breaking In,” which sees a woman (Gabrielle Union) doing whatever it takes to protect her family during a home invasion. While the movie was maligned by most critics, it still managed to turn a profit on a low budget of $6 million.

Opened: March 2, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $46,874,505

Total theater count: 3,064

Using both her body and her brains, Egorova targets an important CIA agent as the fate of two nations hangs in the balance. Both the movie and the book that inspired it may be the stuff of fiction, but the sparrow program itself was in fact a real thing.

#33. Sicario: Day of the Soldado

Opened: June 29, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $48,725,874

Total theater count: 3,055

Opening weekend box office earnings: $19,007,566

In this follow-up to 2015’s “Sicario,” the drug war reaches a fever pitch when the U.S. government suspects that a Mexican cartel is smuggling terrorists across the border. As a responsive measure, CIA agent Matt Graver is given carte blanche to fight the war in any way he sees fit. For him, that means teaming up with black operative Alejandro Gillick (Benicio Del Toro), and kidnapping a kingpin’s daughter.

#32. I Feel Pretty

Opened: April 20, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $48,795,601

Total theater count: 3,440

Opening weekend box office earnings: $16,030,218

Before this Amy Schumer comedy even arrived in theaters, it prompted severe online backlash over perceived negativity regarding body image issues. When it finally did land, both critics and audiences weren’t too impressed by what they saw. In the film, a girl with low self-esteem wakes up one day and thinks she’s the most beautiful girl in the world, even though her appearance hasn’t changed. While the movie didn’t outright tank, it did arguably underperform at the box office.

#31. Overboard

Total domestic box office earnings: $50,316,123

Total theater count: 2,006

Opening weekend box office earnings: $14,711,101

Total domestic box office earnings: $52,801,277

Total theater count: 3,656

Opening weekend box office earnings: $17,886,075

Melissa McCarthy stars in “Life of the Party,” which follows a middle-aged woman as she goes back to college on the heels of her divorce. In addition to playing the lead, McCarthy co-wrote the screenplay with real-life husband Ben Falcone, who handled directing duties. Like their previous collaborations, this one opened to poor reviews, proving once again that McCarthy’s at her comedic best when working off someone else’s script.

#29. Tag

Opened: June 15, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $53,544,175

Total theater count: 3,382

Opening weekend box office earnings: $14,947,396

As wild as it sounds, this ridiculous comedy—about a group of former classmates who play the world’s longest-running game of tag—is actually based on a true story. Not only has the game been going on for 30 years, it spans the entire globe. Bringing the premise to life are a number of notable talents, including Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress, Jon Hamm, Isla Fisher and Rashida Jones.

#28. Tomb Raider

Opened: March 16, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $57,421,715

Total theater count: 3,854

Opening weekend box office earnings: $23,633,317

First it was an incredibly popular video game, then it was a short-lived franchise starring Angelina Jolie and now it’s a lackluster reboot. The movie is “Tomb Raider,” and it chronicles the ongoing exploits of Lara Croft, played this time around by Alicia Vikander. In her latest adventure, Croft heads to a dangerous island to find her missing father.

#27. Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Opened: January 26, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $58,032,443

Total theater count: 3,793

Opening weekend box office earnings: $24,167,011

In the third and final installment of the “Maze Runner” trilogy, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) must lead a team of Gladers into the deadliest maze of them all. Should he succeed, he’ll emerge with the cure for a disease that threatens to annihilate his friends. When making the film, O’Brien suffered a near-fatal head injury during a stunt gone awry, causing the production to shut down for a number of weeks. That simply begs one to ask: was it all worth it? If critical response and box office numbers are anything to go by, not really.

#26. Skyscraper

Opened: July 13, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $59,152,760

Total theater count: 3,822

Opening weekend box office earnings: $24,905,015

Dwayne Johnson is usually box office gold, but that doesn’t mean audiences won’t grow bored with his endless string of disaster movies. To that end, “Skyscraper” was a relative disappointment upon its theatrical release, at least from a blockbuster perspective. Meanwhile, the movie sounds like something conceived by a group of over-caffeinated executives. What if this time, Johnson has to save his family from ruthless terrorists, and they’re all stuck inside a 225-story building, and the building’s on fire?! Yes!

#25. Pacific Rim: Uprising

Opened: March 23, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $59,185,715

Total theater count: 3,708

Opening weekend box office earnings: $28,116,535

It’s giant robots versus giant sea creatures in “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” a sequel to the 2013 original. Guillermo Del Toro was initially supposed to direct, but he dropped out to make “The Shape of Water” instead. Accordingly, the sequel is inferior to the original in every conceivable way, including box office performance.

#24. Blockers

Opened: April 6, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $59,839,515

Total theater count: 3,418

Opening weekend box office earnings: $20,556,350

Three teenage girls plan to lose their virginity on prom night, and it’s up to their respective parents to stop them in this smart, raunchy comedy. While “Blockers” isn’t the first movie to deal with teenage sex on prom night, it is among the few to tackle the premise from the perspective of females and their parents. In response to the film’s fresh take, “Blockers” earned solid reviews from the critics and performed reasonably well at the box office.

#23. Mission: Impossible—Fallout

Opened: July 27, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $61,500,000

Total theater count: 4,386

Opening weekend box office earnings: $61,500,000

The latest installment in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is being touted as the most thrilling one yet. It’s then no wonder that the movie opened to #1 at the box office. In the film, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team are in a race against time to stop three plutonium cores from ending up in the wrong hands. Will this finally be the IMF team’s undoing? Probably not, but the whole thing will undoubtedly go down to the wire.

#22. The Equalizer 2

Opened: July 20, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $64,246,345

Total theater count: 3,388

Opening weekend box office earnings: $36,011,640

Denzel Washington is back as retired CIA operative Robert McCall in “The Equalizer 2.” When the movie opens, McCall is moonlighting as a Lyft driver, and occasionally helps those in need. However, after his close friend Susan (Melissa Leo) is killed by a team of rogue assassins, McCall lets his inner vigilante run free. This is another film that opened recently and will likely be higher on the list by the time it leaves theaters.

#21. The First Purge

Opened: July 4, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $65,485,875

Total theater count: 3,038

Opening weekend box office earnings: $17,374,280

In this prequel to the popular “Purge” series, audiences are shown how the whole horrific tradition began. Specifically, the movie depicts the very first Purge, which is conceived by new political leaders after their party comes into power. The rules are simple: there will be no laws enforced on Staten Island for a full 12 hours, and anyone who decides to stick around will be rewarded $5,000...if they can make it through the night.

#20. Insidious: The Last Key

Opened: January 5, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $67,347,895

Total theater count: 3,150

Opening weekend box office earnings: $29,581,355

Straddling the past and present, “Insidious: The Last Key” centers on parapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), a fixture in the franchise. In this installment, Dr. Rainier is called back to her childhood home, where she first encountered evil spirits as a child. As it turns out, the evil spirits might still be lurking in the very same house, and she must confront them once again.

#19. Book Club

Opened: May 18, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $68,406,773

Total theater count: 3,169

Opening weekend box office earnings: $13,582,231

The premise of four lifelong friends getting together to read the “50 Shades of Grey” trilogy might not sound like a modern Hollywood hit in the making, but “Book Club” nevertheless cranked a respectable profit out of its (estimated) $10 million budget. The comedy-drama stars a number of A-list veterans, including Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda and Richard Dreyfuss.

#18. Game Night

Opened: February 23, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $69,001,013

Total theater count: 3,502

Opening weekend box office earnings: $17,005,332

Putting a comedic twist on movies like David Fincher’s “The Game,” this 2018 comedy stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams as Max and Annie, a competitive married couple who regularly host game nights with a group of friends. It’s all in the name of fun until Max’s brother, Brooks (Kyle Chandler), invites everyone over for a very unique game, which supposedly involves kidnapping and mystery-solving. Suddenly, Brooks is brutally attacked by two kidnappers and then dragged away from the house. At first, Max, Annie, and the others play along, but soon they begin to suspect that this isn’t a game after all. Or is it?

Opened: July 20, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $70,425,525

Total theater count: 3,514

Opening weekend box office earnings: $34,952,180

Still raking in the cash at the box office is this wildly popular musical, which takes place five years after 2008’s “Mamma Mia!” and depicts two separate storylines. In the first storyline, a pregnant Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) prepares to reopen the hotel once run by her now-deceased mother, Donna (Meryl Streep). The movie then jumps into the past, and follows young Donna (Lily James) as she engages in romance with three separate men, one of whom will father Sophie. Which one is anyone’s guess.

#16. I Can Only Imagine

Opened: March 16, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $83,482,352

Total theater count: 2,894

Opening weekend box office earnings: $17,108,914

Based on the true story of MercyMe singer Bart Millard, this dramatic film performed its own respective miracle at the box office—like a number of faith-based movies before it. Explored in the film is Millard’s turbulent childhood, where he suffered abuse at the hands of his father (Dennis Quaid). Years later, Millard loses his father to cancer, then channels his struggles into a song called “I Can Only Imagine.” That was just under 20 years ago. To this day, the song endures as the best-selling Christian rock single of all time

Sending them on their way are three peculiar figures, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who, played respectively by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling. The movie’s domestic gross of about $100 million might seem respectable until one realizes that the movie’s budget was about $100 million. Ouch.

Adapted from the acclaimed book series by Beatrix Potter, “Peter Rabbit” follows the title character and his three sisters as they square off against Mr. McGregor over garden vegetables. After Mr. McGregor passes away, the house ends up in the hands of a relative, who proves to be even worse. Total theater count: 4,206

Opening weekend box office earnings: $75,812,205

The top 10 has been cracked, which means it’s finally time for Marvel movies to enter the fold. Kicking things off is “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which sees Paul Rudd reprising his role as the occasionally microscopic superhero. Still grappling with the events in “Captain America: Civil War,” Ant-Man is called to duty for an important mission. This time, he has a new partner: The Wasp.

Opened: April 6, 2018

Total domestic box office earnings: $187,956,212

Total theater count: 3,808

Opening weekend box office earnings: $50,203,562

In any given year, there’s a smash hit that no one saw coming. In 2018, that hit was “A Quiet Place.” Representing the one film in the top 10 that’s not based on anything but an original screenplay, the movie soared to success thanks to strong word-of-mouth and some truly deft execution. Directed by John Krasinski, the movie takes place in a world that’s been taken over by aliens with an acute sense of hearing. In the midst of this hostile takeover, a man (Krasinski) and his family struggle to survive, all without making a sound. To complicate matters, the man’s wife (Emily Blunt) is in labor.

Total domestic box office earnings: $212,715,759

Total theater count: 4,381

Opening weekend box office earnings: $84,420,489

While domestic box office earnings of more than $200 million are certainly nothing to scoff at, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” was undoubtedly a major disappointment for Disney; the studio sunk $300 million into the shooting budget alone. Trouble was on the horizon long before the movie even hit theaters, when original helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired during production and replaced by Ron Howard. Later, the movie opened to an overwhelming “meh” from audiences. Was it “Star Wars” fatigue? Peripheral fallout caused by “The Last Jedi”? Shoddy execution? Or were there just not enough people out there who wanted to see a Han Solo origin story without Harrison Ford in the lead role? The answer may very well be all of the above—and then some.

In the film, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) reigns over the African kingdom of Wakanda, a technologically advanced society that’s powered by a rare metal called Vibranium. However, trouble ensues when one of Wakanda’s former countrymen, Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), plots to usurp the throne. To protect himself and his nation, the already powerful T’Challa puts on the Black Panther suit to become virtually indestructible.
