Best and worst states for women

With movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp making headlines in 2017, there are many who feel the narrative arc of women facing sexual harassment may be shifting. 2017 saw legions of men in the upper echelons of the entertainment industry scorned from grace as accounts of their sexual misconduct surfaced. The TIME Person of the Year was announced as the women who came forward to share the experiences of abuse. Effects are strongly felt in 2018: the Cannes Film Festival, which ran from May 8th - 19th in 2018,  even set up a sexual harassment hotline this year.

Additionally, while there is no doubt sexual harassment is a potent and awful issue, the fact remains that it is not the only one women face in 2018. With low representation in the House and Senate, it’s questionable if the needs of women will always be representationally addressed. In January 2018, Gallup reported 37% of women are dissatisfied with the state of women in society - the highest number since that questioned was first posed in 2001.

With a myriad number of problems facing equality in mind, Stacker turned to WalletHub for a look at the best and worst states for women. By looking at socioeconomic factors (such as unemployment and poverty rates, attitudes towards women equality, and median earnings) and healthcare and safety (such as rates of violent acts against women, depression rates, and quality of women’s hospitals), WalletHub ranked states in order of their treatment of women. Socioeconomic factors were weighted at 60%, and healthcare and safety at 40%. A more detailed methodology can be found here.
